Colonel Maunsel White was born in Ireland. He came to America as a boy of thirteen. White arrived in New Orleans about 1800, before Napoleon sold Louisiana to the United States. He became an important merchant in that city and became a planter, operating Deer Range Plantation in Plaquemines Parish. White married into the de la Ronde family and had children.

During the War of 1812, White commanded a company of volunteers that participated in the Battle of New Orleans. White became acquainted with General Andrew Jackson, commander of the American forces at New Orleans. White maintained a lifelong friendship with Jackson, and acted as General Jackson's cotton factor.

In 1846 White was elected to the Louisiana Senate and served for four years in that office.
