Alexander Hosack (b. 1736) came from Morayshire, Scotland and served as an officer in the artillery of the British Army, distinguishing himself at the capture of Louisburg in 1758. He became a physician and was one of the Censors of the College of Physicians and Surgeons.

He was ever an enterprising man, labored successfully to achieve an affluent home and to give his children the best possible education available at the time. He became the owner of a number of properties. In 1786, he was listed as a "woolen and linen draper at 72 William Street"

His son David, also a physician, tended to Alexander Hamilton after the duel with Aaron Burr. Hosack was married to Jane Arden, and was a member of the Saint Andrew's Society and the Saint Nicholas Society.
