She married into the Morozov family and on the death of her husband in 1662 became one of the wealthiest people in Russia. She became a strong supporter of the Archpriest Avvakum, the leader of the 'Old Believers' who attempted to reform the Russian church, against the will of the Tsars. This lead to her persecution, and the confiscation of her wealth. She died in appalling circumstances, literally left to rot, starving and thirsting, in the dungeons of the Borovsk monastery. The site of her grave has now been identified and a chapel is presently being built around it.
