He was the oldest of six children of Foy Dell & Sirildia Jane (Northey) Brown. He attended Table Rock high school. He played clarinet in high school and performed in the Eddie Hanna Band. His senior year he entered the Navy on March 21, 1945 and was honorably discharged on July 23rd 1946. He then received his high school diploma. He worked for the Burlington Northern Railroad running heavy machinery. Don worked at the Pawnee City schools as a custodian and bus driver, he also worked at the Beatrice State Home and the City of Pawnee City until his death.

He was married June 15, 1949 to Betty Babcock. They had four children: Janice, Terry, Alan and Ryan.
