Walter Bruce Heaton was born November 18, 1922 in Greenville County, South Carolina. His parents were John Walter and Ida Eugenia Ouzts Heaton. He had an older sister, Mildred, who was nine years older than him. When he was five years old the entire family contracted typhoid fever. Mildred died from this on July 21, 1928. His mother, Ida, was so sick she was not even aware of Mildred's death until after she had been buried. This was a loss that Ida never got over. Little is known about Bruce's childhood, other than it was marked by this tragedy.
On May 17, 1940 Bruce married Willie Mary Stephens. They had a daughter, Willie Mary. After four years of marriage they must have been thrilled at the birth of their coming child. Willie Mary died just days later on September 11, 1944 from complications of the birth. Willie Mary's family raised Bruce's daughter, Mary.
After the death of his wife, Bruce moved into a local boarding house. He was working at Monaghan Mill and to my knowledge never worked anywhere else. It was at the boarding house that Bruce met Virginia Patton. She also worked at Monaghan Mill. They were married on August 5, 1949 at Franklin Baptist Church by Virginia's brother-in-law, Rev. Earl Pym. Their first son, Robert Lee Heaton a year later. He was born only two months after the death of Virginia's father and named for him. Their daughter, Sandra Gail Heaton, was born two years later. The family began attending City View Baptist Church a few years later. At that time the original church was on Montana St. just a few houses from their residence. The church later expanded and moved to the 253 highway. Bruce loved the circus and had memorabilia around the house, as well as a number of slides taken over the years. He apparently went to the circus as much as possible. He also enjoyed watching Westerns.
He was a part of the City Council and Police Department in City View. He died on February 22, 1983 and is buried at Woodlawn Cemetery in Greenville.
