With his wife, a pioneer of bicycle touring:
- 1892-1896, Europe & Algeria
- 1897-1899, Ceylon, Java, & India
- 1898-1912, 8 expeditions in the Himalayan Mountains

Together, they were also famous early mountain-climbers. They made ascents of peaks in the Himalayas of over 18,000 feet. In 1906, they were the first to reach the summit of Nun Kun's Pinnacle Peak - 22,736 feet.
