John McAleer, son of John McAleer spademaker of Drumnakilly, Termonmaguirk, county, Tyrone, Ireland, was born in Saint John, New Brunswick 24 March 1828, and baptized at St. Malachy's 28 March 1828. Sponsors were John Hughes and Sarah Hughes.
In 1850-1855, John McAleer lived with his brother Patrick in Boston, and learned the carpentry trade from him.

John McAleer moved to New York City. He and his wife had 8 children; including Helen Alice (McAleer) Gilbert; Amelia (McAleer) Crosby and Mary F. McAleer, principal of Public School no. 188.

His brother Patrick McAleer is buried at Holyhood Cemetery, Brookline, Massachusetts,
