U.S. Congressman. He graduated from Erskine College, in 1933, did graduate work at Duke University and was a teacher- administrator at Central School, Rock Hill, South Carolina, (1935-41). During World War II, he served in the U.S. Navy, (1942-46). After the war, he was on the staff of Congressman James P. Richards, (1946-51), postmaster, Rock Hill, South Carolina, (1951-54) and chairman of the board of trustees of Rock Hill School District Three, (1953-60). In 1964, he was elected as a Democrat to the Eighty-eighth Congress to fill the vacancy caused by the resignation of United States Representative Robert W. Hemphill and reelected to the next five succeeding Congresses, serving until he resigned in 1974. He died in retirement at age 90.
