Three die when truck
runs stop sign, hits car

Hickman, Ky. – Three people died Monday morning when a garbage truck ran a stop sign and collided with a car at Ky. 125 and State Line Road, about seven miles south of here, state police said.

Jimmy D. McClure and Katie McNeill, both of Hickman, and Elizabeth A. Lattus, of Louisville, were pronounced dead on arrival at Baptist Hospital in Union City, Tenn., shortly after the 9 a.m. accident.
McClure, 39, was driving the garbage truck west on State Line Road. Lattus, 60, was traveling north on Ky. 125. McNeill, 95, was a passenger in Lattus’ car.

State police said McClure’s truck went through the stop sign and hit Lattus’ car in its side. The truck landed on top of the car. McClure was thrown from the truck and was pinned between the two vehicles; Lattus and McNeill were crushed underneath.

State police said “River City Refuse” was printed on the side of the truck, but that it was registered to an individual whose name they would not release.

Bill Murray, who dispatched Hickman fire and police officers to the scene, said a question of which stat’s police had jurisdiction over the accident arose, but not until after the accident had been worked.
State police officials then tried to determine exactly where the collision had occurred.

Murray said the west side of State Line Road is considered part of Kentucky; the east side, part of Tennessee.

“We didn’t care who had jurisdiction,” Murray said. “We all responded immediately and did everything we could because it was a disaster and an emergency.

“The question of jurisdiction didn’t come up until after we had done everything we could do.”

Along with Hickman police and Kentucky State Police, Fulton County and Obion County, Tenn., sherriff’s deputies and Tennessee State Police responded to the accident.

Kentucky State Police Trooper Billy Davidson investigated.
