Howard E. Sullivan Sr., 91, of Arrowsic Road, died Wednesday, July 18, 2007, at Midcoast Senior Rehabilitation Center. He was born in Bartlett, N.H. on Sept. 24, 1915, a son of Alexander E. and Florence I. LaForce Sullivan.

He moved to South Portland when he was 12 years old. During the early years of World War II, he worked at the South Portland Shipyard as a crane operator. He then joined the U. S. Army and served as a medium tank crewman. He left the Army in 1946 with the rank of Staff Sergeant. He worked for Koppers Company of Portland doing road tarring and then started H. E. Sullivan Tarring and Trucking. He moved to Woolwich in 1955 and then to Arrowsic in 1960. In 1964 he started a contract school busing company and in 1967 bought Bath Bus Service which he operated until the early 1980s. He continued to drive the school bus until his retirement in 1992. His many business interests and operation of the small family farm left him little time for hobbies; however, he did enjoy spending time with his family, animals, and reading. He was a former vice commander of Harold T. Andrews American Legion Post of Portland, life member of Smith-Tobey American Legion Post of Bath, life member of the Bath Lodge of Elks, a former member of the Colonial Club and Lions Club, and a communicant of St. Mary's Catholic Church in Bath.

He married 1st to Hazel Belle Fayle, in 1935. They had 4 children.

He married 2nd to Catherine C. King on Aug. 21, 1948, in Portland. They had 5 children.

He is predeceased by his wife of 45 years who died in 1992; a brother, George A. Sullivan; and a sister, Marguerite Stonehouse.

Visiting hours will be held 4-7 p.m., Friday, July 27, 2007, at David E. Desmond & Son Funeral Home, 638 High St., Bath. An Elks service will be held at 6 p.m. and an American Legion service at 6:30 p.m. A Mass of Christian burial will be held 10 a.m., Saturday, July 28, 2007, at St. Mary's Catholic Church, 144 Lincoln St., Bath. Interment will take place at 12:45 p.m. at Calvary Cemetery in South Portland. Memorial donations may be made to the charity of one's choice. Arrangements are by David E. Desmond & Son Funeral Home, 638 High St., Bath.
