Charles B. Clay was born in Tennessee, he migrated to East Texas as a young boy with his father John Clay, and mother Sarah. His father John Clay was one of the early pioneers of Shelby County,Texas.

Charles Clay served as a private in the Civil War in Ochiltree's Regiment(18th Infantry Co l, C.S.A.) He fought in The Battle of Mansfield.

He was the Postmaster at the Claysmound Post Office until 1866

Charles married his first wife Tabitha Dixon, the daughter of John Riley Dixon, after returning from the war. They had 3 sons and one daughter. Tabitha died before 1880. Charles then married Melissa Moreau and they had seven children.
