"Mrs. Anne Hawkins was likely born in the mid 1840's in Houston Co, Georgia as a slave of David Giles (1800-1875) who owned her grandmother, mother, sister, and 2 brothers.

This is according to the narrative Mrs. Anne gave to the WPA interviewers on August 16, 1937. The Giles family probably brought Anne with them when they moved to Titus County, Texas between 1850-1860. By 1870, 25 year old Anne was the wife of David Staten and had 2 children, Elizabeth and Martha.

They lived in the Mount Pleasant area of Titus County, Texas. By 1880, Anne is widowed and has added Charles, David, and Wesley Staten to her family.

On January 20, 1884 Anne married second husband, Harvey Bedford, in Franklin County, Texas and gave the Miller maiden name on her first legally recognized marriage license form.

In 1900 Anne continues to live on a mortgaged farm she and Mr. Bedford bought before his death in Franklin County, Texas. Anne also has children: Julia, Pinkney, Emma, and Alberta Bedford to keep her company. In this census record Ann says she had given birth to 9 children and only 5 are living. 1910 finds Anne still in Franklin County, Texas but now with her married daughter, Emma Bedford Ware.

Between 1910-1920 Ann married and buried 3rd husband, Mr. Wilson, and moved to Colbert, Bryan County, Oklahoma. There she is lives with married
daughter, Alberta Bedford Brannon Bryan, and a number of grandchildren.

On November 5, 1928 Anne Wilson marries 4th husband, widower Cornelius (Nealy) Hawkins, in Bryan County, Oklahoma. Mr. Hawkins is a Chickasaw Freedman and is #3776 on the Dawes Roll. Mr. Hawkins passed away on October 31, 1930 and is likely buried in Shady Cemetery too.

Mrs. Anne had a really hard life, but she triumphed for a century and left us part of her story in her own words. God bless and keep you Mrs. Anne."
