Clara C. Garnsey, 100, formerly of Grindstone Island and Clayton, widow of Robert W. Garnsey, died at 4:45 Wednesday morning at the United Helpers Cedars Nursing Home, Ogdensburg, where she had been a resident since April 23, 1979.
The funeral will be at 1 p.m. Friday at the Cummings Funeral Home, with Rev. Dale Austin, pastor of Clayton United Methodist Church, officiating. Spring burial will be on Grindstone Island.
Calling hours will be 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home. Contributions may be made to the Clayton Volunteer Ambulance Fund.
Surviving are two daughters, Mrs. Florence E. Matthews and Mrs. Pauline R. Hunneyman, both of Clayton; six grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; 30 great-great-grandchildren; a sister, Mrs. Verna Dwyer, Clayton, and many nieces, nephews and cousins.
Two sons, Lawrence G. and Clarence W. Garnsey, died before her. Two brothers, Edwin K. and Irwin J. Turcotte, and a sister, Aleatha Pettit, also died previously.
Born on Grindstone Island on Dec. 21, 1888, a daughter of Joseph and Clara Fowler Turcotte, she was educated in schools on Grindstone Island.
She married Robert W. Garnsey Aug. 24, 1905, at the Grindstone Island Methodist Church. Following their marriage, the couple operated a farm on Grindstone Island, before moving to Clayton in 1943.
Mr. Garnsey also carried the mail to and from Grindstone Island by boat for more than 23 years. A native of Grindstone Island, he died Oct. 18, 1968. He was 81.
Mrs. Garnsey, a housewife, was a member of the Clayton United Methodist Church and a former member of the Clayton Order of the Eastern Star.
