Isabella was born at the Balinakill estate in Clachan, Kintyre Penninsula, Scotland. She came to North Carolina with her parents in 1739 aboard the vessel "Thistle" which her father, in partnership with 4 other Scots (one of whom was her maternal uncle, Dugald McNeill) had purchased and which bore about 350 Scots to the Cape Fear River area of North Carolina. Her paternal Campbell relatives were probably the kin of the man she married; a money-pinched Baronet by the name of Farquhard Campbell.
