George Morgan was born at Chatham, Columbia County, July 16, 1816. His father, William Morgan, came to Chatham from Hartford, Ct, and was a farmer and clothier. In 1819 he moved with is family to Salisbury, Ct. At the age of 17 he left home, later coming to Pine Plains. When he was 32 years old, he became a dealer in charcoal at Mt. Riga, and made money rapidly. He then purchased the Dakin ore bed, and made more money. He moved to Poughkeepsie and was elected Mayor in 1869, serving until March 1871. He was also elected to State Senate, his rival being Jonathan Rider. He married his first wife, Almena Trpp, at Pulvers Corners in 1838, and she died in 1859 [sic], leaving 3 daus and 3 sons, of whom but one son the three daus are now living. His second wife was Fanny Card, of Millerton, and she died in Dec, 1877, leaving 2 daus and 2 sons, one son having died, making 8 children in all left behind, the youngest being about 6 years of age.
