Jesse Lyons was Well Know Here, Fought for South;

Had Been In Ill Health For Some Time

Jesse Lyons, 79, who passed away at his home at Ashland Friday night is deeply and sincerely mourned. For many years, he was one of Ashland's substantial citizens. He was honored and respected by all who knew him. Mr. Lyons had been in poor health for a long time, but had only been critically ill for a short time. He was born Feb 24 1844 in Elliott County. He was a son of Louis and Sina Grizzell Lyons. he was twice married, his first wife was a Miss Pennington, and after her death he was married to Miss Nancy Kegley, who survivies him. He is also survived by the following children: Mrs. James Green, Mrs. Charles Hart, Mrs. Nathan Bryant, and Mrs. Harris Bryant, of Hoods Creek, Mrs. William Barker of Oakview, Mrs. Robert Handley of Ashland, Mrs. Harry Johnson of Jenkins, Miss Mollie Lyons at home and Azzel Joel, Crockett and Will Lyons of Ashland. He is also survived by 52 grandchildren and nine great grandchildren. He saw distinguished service in the cause of the Confederacy and was full of reminiscences of the turbulent times of the great struggle and of the days before the War. Although he fought valiantly for the great "Lost Cause" there never was a more loyal and more law abiding and God fearing citizen within the corporate limites of Ashland than Mrs. Lyons. He was a member of the regular Old School Baptist Church, which was the faith of his fathers, and he had always lived a consistent Christian life and reared a large family of children. Mr. Lyons was ever a devoted husband and father ans was much loved by his neighbors and friends. He was a member of several fraternal orders. The funeral was held this afternoon at the home and was conducted by Rev. John Thornbury of the Regular Baptist Church, assisted by Rev. Paul S. Powell of the First ME Church, South, of Ashland. Burial will be in the Ashland cemetery. The bereaved family has the sympathy of a large circle of friends.
