(New) Company I "Minutemen of Attala" (Attala County), 13th Mississippi Infantry, Barksdale's Brigade, McLaws' Division, 1st Corps, Army of Northern Virginia, C.S.A.
This 23-year-old enlisted 13 Mar 1861 at Corinth, Mississippi and was mustered into Captain Fletcher's Company, Mississippi Volunteers as a Private at Kosciusko by Lt. Joseph Bradley. (This company subsequently became (New) Company I, 13th Mississippi Infantry.
Reported as sick on 1 Jun 1861, he was sent home to recuperate, returning to duty the following early Sept.
On 1 Oct 1861 he was diagnosed with erysipelas (infection) of an eye.
Transferred into the Regimental Band as Musician on 1 Dec 1861.
Detailed as Commissary Sgt. 8 Nov 1862.
On 1 Apr 1863 Michael was reported as sick, "Died 9:30 a.m. from illness," (typhoid pneumonia) and was "buried Fredericksburg City Cemetery at 4:00 PM that same day by his Company with the Honors of War, escorted by the Regimental Band; Chaplain Dr. Thomas Sterling West officiated".
"Mike" authored a diary throughout his service.
The 13th 13th Infantry Regiment completed its organization at Corinth, Mississippi, in May, 1861. Its members were raised in the counties of Lauderdale, Winston, Wayne, Attala, Newton, Chickasaw, Kemper, and Clarke.
