The crash occurred around 7 p.m. on 144th Street and Cameron Road, just east of Kearney, Mo., and north of Clay County's Midwest National Air Center. The helicopter had flown from the Heartland Regional Medical Center in St. Joseph, Mo. to Bethany to pick up the patient. The helicoptor was en route to Liberty and had intended to stop at an airport in Mosby for fuel.

Randy graduated from South Nodaway High School in 1981 and from Excelsior College in 1996. While still in high school, he worked as a nurse's aid at Saint Francis Hospital in Maryville, Mo.

He joined the Missouri Army National Guard and completed his basic training at Fort Jackson, S.C., serving as a specialist with the Headquarters Battery 1/129th Field Artillery for six years as a combat medic.

After he was honorably discharged in 1987, he worked at numerous Ambulance Districts throughout Northwest Missouri as a Paramedic and served as a Supervisor at Gold Cross. At Heartland Regional Medical Center, he was a Staff Nurse, Resource Nurse, educator and Preceptor in the Emergency Department. Randy also served as an air crew member for LifeNet Air Medical Services where he became a Chief Flight Nurse and Base Supervisor in 2000 at the St. Joseph, Missouri Rosecrans Airbase.

He also taught classes for the American Heart Association and Emergency Nurses Association and mentored paramedic and nursing students and other health professionals. He was a member of the Emergency Nurses Association, Air and Surface Transport Nurses Association, and the Missouri Emergency Medical Association. He was always willing to share his knowledge.

In his 29 years of experience, Randy gave his all to comfort those in need and saved countless lives. He was known for making people feel welcome, even during the worst of times.

He performed his duty by choice, knowing it had risk, but he bravely took to the sky in order to save lives. He died a true hero, and his sacrifice will not be forgotten.
