Dr. Mary Beth Foil, 51, died Thursday, Feb. 17, 2005, at Pitt County Memorial Hospital. A memorial service will be conducted Monday at 11 a.m. at St. Timothy's Episcopal Church in Greenville.

A native of Forsyth County, Dr. Foil graduated from Chapel Hill High School. She attended the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, receiving a bachelor of arts degree in chemistry and zoology in 1976. She was a member of the first graduating class of the East Carolina University
School of Medicine, where she also performed her residency in general surgery and served as chief resident. She completed her trauma surgery fellowship at the University of California, San Diego Medical Center, and was a fellow of the American College of Surgeons.

In practice in Greenville for more than 10 years, Dr. Foil worked in the East Carolina University School of Medicine as a faculty member, associate professor and as chief of surgical critical care.

She was recognized numerous times for the excellence of her teaching. She also worked as the associate medical director of trauma services at Pitt County Memorial Hospital.

Dr. Foil is survived by her parents, William C. and Patricia P. Foil; a daughter, Sally Tucker Foil; brothers, Mark and Drew Foil; and her special friend and life partner, Carrie Craig.
