George was born in Winona Co., Minnesota, and later his family moved to Crow Wing Co., Minnesota. It was here his father died in 1928.
May 3, 1930, his mother, Nellie Jones Porter, married Oscar E. West, whose wife had passed away in 1929. The couple raised Oscar's daughter, Nellie's daughter and two sons, and then they added four more children to the family.
Oscar and Nellie eventually moving to the state of Washington, bringing most of the family with them.
George was married to Winona F. Wilks Mitchell on March 12, 1988, in Kitsap Co., Washington.
He had been a resident of Tacoma for 57 years at the time of his death.
