SHARON — A funeral Mass will be held Saturday for Diane
Cione Bayer, 1134 Eighth Ave. N., Naples, Fla. She died of natural causes at 10:15 a.m. Wednesday, July 2, 2003, in the hospital of Sharon Regional Health System. She was 79.

Mrs. Bayer was born April 28, 1924, in Farrell to Joseph
Cione and Helen Nicastro Cione.

She attended Sharon elementary schools and was a 1941 graduate of Sharon High School. Upon graduation, she
was employed as a bookkeeper for the John Schuster Beverage
Distributing Co. in Sharon. Beginning in 1943 with employment at the U.S. Navy Yard Mare Island, Vallejo, Calif., she worked for a number of Navy activities for 31 years without a break in service, retiring in 1973. Her Navy activities were the Pearl Harbor (Hawaii) Navy Yard; San Francisco Navy Yard; U.S.N. Shipbuilding and
Scheduling Activity, Philadelphia; Bureau of Ships, Washington, D.C.; Ships Systems Command; and Navy Shipbuilding Council, Naval Material Command, both Arlington, Va. A distinctive element of her employment was that it was under the command of only U.S.N. Engineering Duty Officers (Ships). During her tenure, she became
proficient in ships' naval nomenclature and terms, work
breakdown structure, design and contract phases, new construction, maintenance and logistics support aspects. She was particularly proud of her participation as the admiral'ssecretary/adminstrative assistant in the acquisition of the DD-963, Spruance Class Destroyers,
of 30 ships with follow- on of numerous missile cruisers. She was also proud that her retirement letter was
acknowledged and signed by a vice admiral and two rear admirals of the U.S. Navy.

Diane was a member of St. Ann's Catholic Church in Naples and during the summer months, Our Lady of Fatima Church in Farrell. She absorbed, enjoyed and applied the messages of the early Sunday Mass homilies as delineated during services at the latter church.

She enjoyed cooking, reading and just being with her
husband. Traveling was their forte, including a number of
trips to European countries, especially to Rome/St. Peter's
Basilica; a cruise on the Adriatic Sea to Venice; a return to Hawaii for their 50th wedding anniversary; a considerable number of Caribbean cruises in celebration of the wedding anniversary; and many roundtrips from Naples to the Shenango Valley toward rejuvenating family
relationships.

She is survived by her husband, Albert N. Bayer, whom
she married Feb. 9, 1944, in Our Lady of Peace Cathedral,
Honolulu, Hawaii.

Also surviving are: two sisters, Antoinette Bruder and her
husband Edward, Rockville, Md.; and Ida Pacileo and her
husband Vincent, Vienna, Ohio; and a brother, William Cione
and his wife Margaret, Sharon.

She is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews, notably her goddaughter, Susan Bruder, and her godson, Anthony Pacileo.

She was preceded in death by her parents; two sisters, Jenny Kempa and Emma Zec; and three brothers, James Cione
Sr., and Melvin and Richard Cione.
