Hamp was the son of Joseph Hamilton Green, Sr. and Abigail Elizabeth Cook Green. On 27 February 1879, Joseph Hamilton (Hamp) Green, Jr. and Sarah "Sallie" Melissa Bussey were married. He also went by Hampton. Hamp and Sallie had three sons. He died about 1884.

Hamp was the 7th great grandson of Stephen Hopkins of the Mayflower. Stephen Hopkins was a signer of the Mayflower Compact. Hamp was also the 6th great grandson of Giles Hopkins, Stephen Hopkins' son, and Giles was a child on the Mayflower. Stephen Hopkins was also on the ill fated voyage of the Sea Venture before his voyage on the Mayflower. The Sea Venture was shipwrecked in Bermuda on the way to Jamestown, Virginia. Stephen Hopkins eventually made it to Jamestown, Virginia.

Three of Hamp's ancestors are documented Daughters of the American Revolution soldiers and patriots. These ancestors are Captain James Green, Jesse Cook and John Cole.
