Helen Marcella Weems Altice

Helen Marcella Weems Altice, 88, of Richmond, Va., died Tuesday after an extended illness.

She was a daughter of the late Cora (King) and Marion Bailey Weems of the Wesley's Chapel community.

Her family provided the following statement: "Mrs. Altice's family settled in the Wesley's Chapel valley in 1790 and helped establish the (United) Methodist Church, contributing land for the church. Her aunt, Molly Weems King, was appointed the first female superintendent of Greene County Schools in 1911 by Andre Patterson.

"She remembered friends in the Baileyton, Ottway, and Sulfur Springs communities with great fondness.

"Helen Altice and each of her siblings grew up during the Depression and each completed college, an admirable accomplishment of the times.

"She taught home economics in the Springfield, Va., area, and, after she was widowed, completed her master's degree in education.

"Her students appreciated all the special attention they received in her classes and spoke often of those classes changing their lives.

"Mrs. Altice and her husband, William Curtis Altice, were instrumental in the founding of St. John's Methodist Church in Springfield, Va., where they enjoyed a fellowship with their children, Bill and Elizabeth.

She was preceded in death by her two sisters: Maude Elizabeth Weems and Edith Weems Fox, and her brother: Dr. Bliss King Weems.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Wesley's Chapel United Methodist Church, 2750 S. Wesley's Chapel Road, Greeneville, TN 37743.
