Asher was fond of books from an early age. He was educated in a school that was described as a "rude primitive building with a puncheon floor and heated by an old-fashioned fireplace, furnished with slabs for seats and a board across the end of the room for a desk on which the larger scholars practiced their writing."
From the time he was old enough, Asher helped his father with the farm work.
Asher married Fanny Gilman on 08 Oct 1846 in Calhoun County. He was a farmer, and they were the parents of 6 children, but only 2 survived childhood--Charles and Nancy.
Asher acquired a large amount of land in Hardin Precinct. He became known as one of the most successful pioneer farmers in the area.
Fanny died in 1859.
Children from first marriage: 3 sons, 3 daughters.
Asher married Sarah Henderson Brown on 08 Dec 1859 in Calhoun County. They were the parents of at least 7 children. However, 5 of them died young and only Alice and Maud survived childhood.
Children from second marriage: 3 daughters, 4 sons.
Suffering from poor health, Asher went to Hot Springs, Arkansas for a time with hope that his condition would improve. He died there at the age of 58 years, 5 months and 20 days old.
Asher's body was returned to Hardin for burial. Funeral services were conducted at 2 p.m. on the afternoon of 29 Jan 1903.

Obituary:
It is with regret that we announce the death of A. G. Squire [sic], which occurred at Hot Springs, Arkansas on Saturday morning last where he had been for some time with hope of regaining health.
Mr. Squire was born in New York August 7, 1824. In 1833 he moved to Calhoun County where he resided ever since, thus making him a resident of Calhoun for fifty years. He was one of Calhoun's best citizens.
He was respected throughout the county and his loss to the county and the community in which he lived is an irreparable one and one that will not be forgotten.
His remains were brought to his residence south of Hardin on Sunday and kept till Monday at 2 o'clock p.m. when, after appropriate services by Rev. Jas. Stout, they were followed by a large concourse of friends and relatives to his last resting place in the family cemetery near his residence.
