Homer was the son of Luther Hinman and Catherine nee Salisbury. He married Susan Bloom on January 29, 1845 in Bartholomew County, Indiana. He had two daughters with her. After her death, he remarried to Miranda F. (Jones) Comstock, a widow, on November 14, 1850 in Columbus, Bartholomew County, Indiana. They had one son together. Homer was a physician.
