Albert Sidney Johnston, Jr. was killed in the boiler explosion of the "Ada Hancock" a steam tender that was ferrying passengers out the "Senator" in deeper waters which took people up and down the Coast.

On its second run to The Senator, the Ada Hancock encountered a violent squall which caused the boat to take on water. When the cold sea water hit its boiler, it exploded, causing one of the deadliest West Coast sea disasters on record as of that time. 26 of the 53 passengers on board the Ada Hancock died.

He was first buried on the Fair Oaks Ranch, in current Altadena, but was moved to Rosedale 30 APR 1888.
