James parents are Harold "Rip" Van Winkle and Dorothy Berberick Van Winkle. James fought in the Vietnam War and received an Honorable Discharge and a Purple Heart Medal. He married, Adriane Capaldo Carpenito, his childhood sweetheart on January 28, 1968. They had two sons James and David. James worked in construction and surveying. He was always willing to lend a helping hand to family members and those in need.

James served his country as a soldier in the U.S. Army where he was awarded the Purple Heart while serving in Vietnam. He worked as a surveyor for Operating Engineers Local #825 and was a member of the American Legion, Disabled American Veterans and the Knights of Columbus. James was the beloved husband of Adriane (nee: Carpenito) Van Winkle of Hawthorne. Loving father of James Van Winkle of Hazlet and David Van Winkle and his wife Sharon of Rutherford. Dear grandfather of Ashley and David Van Winkle of Rutherford, Olivia and Nicholas Van Winkle of Hazlet. Dearest brother of Harriet Phillips and her husband Richard of Burlington, NJ, and Linda Soderstrom and her husband Edward of Bayonne. A memorial mass will be held at 10 AM on Saturday, August 20, 2011, at St. Mary's R.C. Church, Rutherford. Memorial donations may be made to the Valley Hospital Foundation, 223 N. Van Dien Ave., Ridgewood, 07450.
