Gust C. Zarnas, 87 years, of Bethlehem, Penn., died on Tuesday, December 26, 2000 at St. Luke's Hospital in Fountain Hill. The husband of Grace (Kotses) Zarnas, they were married 56 years on April 22nd.

Born December 16, 1913 in Ikaria, Greece, he was the son of the late Steve and Helen (Pamphilis) Zarnas. Graduated from The Ohio State University in 1938 with a B.S. in Education and a minor in Biological Science. Attended Pittsburgh University and New York University towards his Masters Degree. President and Treasurer of G.C. Zarnas & Co. Inc. (a contracting firm specializing in industrial and commercial painting and contracting services), 1949 to present; football and wrestling coach from 1947 to 1949; instructor and football and wrestling coach at the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy in Kings Point, NY, 1946 to 1947; instructor and coach at East Liverpool, Ohio, High School, 1941 to 1947; professional football player for the Chicago Bears and Green Bay Packers from 1938-1940 (Green Bay Packers won the championship in 1939). Served as a Lt. Senior Grade in the U.S. Navy during World War II from 1942 to 1946; played for the Great Lakes Naval Training Center Team which won the Armed Services Training Programs at various centers; Athletic Officer in Navy V-12 Program. Chosen on the All-American, All Big Ten and All Midwest Football Teams in 1937; earned varsity letters in football at The Ohio State University in 1935, 1936, and 1937, also awarded letters in baseball and track; won intramural heavyweight wrestling championship at The Ohio State University; selected to play in the East-West Shrine Game and the College All-Stars in 1938; selected to The Ohio State University All Sport Hall of Fame, the AHEPA (American Hellenic Educational Progressive Association) All Sports Hall of Fame, The Allegheny-Kiski Valley All Sports Hall of Fame, inducted into the National Football Foundation Hall of Fame in 1975; received the Award of Honor in 1977 from the Boys Club in Bethlehem, Penn. Charter member of the Lehigh Valley Chapter of the National Football Foundation and Hall of Fame; member of the Masonic Order and the Order of AHEPA, Homer Chapter 65 in Bethlehem. He was primarily interested in youth fitness programs such as the Boy Scouts, Boy's Club, Little League and Y.M.C.A. Also interested and active in educational institutions like The Ohio State University, Lehigh University, Moravian College, Moravian Academy and Allentown College of St. Francis DeSales. He also participated in local drives for Historic Bethlehem, Lehigh Valley Hospitals and numerous religious organizations. Member St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church in Bethlehem, Penn. In addition to his wife, he is survived by one son, Stephen C. Zarnas of Bethlehem and a daughter, Elaine G. Glaros of Bethlehem; brother, Michael Zarnas of Bethlehem; two sisters, Esther Spanos of Bethlehem and Stella Caruso of Long Island, New York; six grandchildren. Funeral services will be on Wednesday, January 3, 2001 at 10:30 a.m. from the JOHN F. HERRON FUNERAL HOME, 458 Center Street in Bethlehem, (610)866-0671, with continued services at 11 a.m. in St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church, 1607 West Union Blvd. in Bethlehem. Viewing on Tuesday, January 3, 2001 from 7-9 p.m. in the funeral home. Trisagion service on Tuesday at 8 p.m. in the funeral home. Interment will be in Hellertown Union Cemetery in Helleterown, Penn.
