Adolph Neumann was born in Langenlonsheim, Germany, March 14, 1835. He married Elizabeth Kampf, who was born in Germany 1838. Adolph was in German Military Service and later learned the tin shop and hardware trade. His musical instrument was the flute. The family came to America in 1857, with three children, Jacob Philip, Adolph and Lucy. They settled in Bishop Hill near Cambridge, Illinois. Here he had a hardware store and tin shop. When his brother Jacob was a bugler in the Civil War, he made a water tight tin tube for his music, and this tube is still in the hands of Jacob's son, Eugene Neumann. Adolph was a staunch Methodist and was a Mason for 37 years. For outside interest he played in a brass band in Galva, Illinois.
In Bishop Hill he became the father of four daughters, Agusta Caroline, Alice Elizabeth, Olive Rose and Etta Amanda. They as a family lived here over 30 years. The mother Elizabeth Neumann died in 1893, and in the same year the family moved to Jerico Springs, Cedar, Missouri and located on a farm.
Adolph Neumann was on the executive committee, which arranged the family Reunion of the Neumanns of America, held at the Chautauqua grounds, Fremont, Nebraska. His family journeyed from Jerico Springs, Missouri to Fremont, Nebraska in a covered wagon. After the reunion the daughter, Olive, was employed in her Uncle Henry's store in Oakland, Nebraska. Etta visited her Uncle Fred and Aunt Minnie for a few months. The year 1897, a year after the Reunion they went to Nebraska to live, giving much pleasure to them to be near so many relatives. This family kept together 18 years after the mother's death. When the girls were all married, Adolph made his home with the daughters. He was very contented and at last had a chance to read.
Adolph Neumann was born 1835 and died 1923. Elizabeth Neumann was born 1838 and died 1893. They are buried in Bishop Hill Cemetery.
