Musician, Songwriter. He was active in the theater and composed songs for the King's Men (William Shakespear's theatrical company) from 1614-1629. He was a member of the London waits (city musicians) and in 1635 he served King Charles I as a court musician. He received his doctorate in music from Oxford University and spent the years of the Commonwealth in Churchill, Oxfordshire. He was named Heather Professor of Music at Oxford in 1656. At the restoration of the monarchy, he resigned his professorship in 1661 to rejoin the Court as a lutenist and gentleman of the Chapel Royale. During his life he wrote more than 200 songs, including sacred and dramatic songs and settings of Latin odes. He also wrote psalm settings which were published under "Psalterium Carolinum" in 1657 and composed tunes under "Cheerful Ayres or Ballads" published in 1660.
