Annie Veronica Butler Curtis, 94, Charlotte Hall died peacefully May 25, 2011, at her home, surrounded by her children and grandchildren.
Born Jan. 7, 1917, she was the middle child of Abraham and Florine Reid Butler. She resided in Charlotte Hall her entire life.
She was educated by her father in the Oaks School, a one room schoolhouse for African American students in the Golden Beach area, and continued her education at Cardinal Gibbons Institute in Ridge, the first Catholic high school for blacks in St. Mary's County.
Prior to her marriage to Bernard Curtis on June 21, 1947, she worked at the Bureau of Engraving and Printing in Washington, D.C., and served as a member of the USO. Once married she returned to St. Mary's county as a full time wife and homemaker. She was interviewed by Dr. J. Roy Guyther Jr. for his book "Charlotte Hall, the Village - 1797 to 1997."
In 2009, she wss one of 50 blacks in St. Mary's county interviewed by the Unified Committee for Afro-American Contributions. Her oral history assisted them in recounting education for African Americans in St. Mary's county and is published in the book "In Relentless Pursuit of an Education: African American Stories from a Century of Segregation (1865 - 1967)". Her oral history remains available at www.ucaconline.org and her book remains on exhibit at the Reginald F. Lewis Museum in Baltimore.
She was preceded in death by her parents and husband and her siblings, Margaret Rose, Louise Thomas, Regina White and John Butler.
She is survived by her children, Don Curtis (Catherine) of Mechanicsville, Gary Curtis (Ruth) of Lake Ridge, Va., Carolyn Curtis of Washington, D.C. and Joan Waters of Charlotte Hall; nine grandchildren and five great grandchildren.
Services were held Monday, June 6, at Gospel Tabernacle of Prayer in Clements. Interment will take place at Charles Memorial Gardens. Arrangements were handled by Adams Funeral Home in Aquasco.
