Double funeral services were held Monday morning at 8:30 from the home of Nick Abel and at 9:00 o'clock from the Catholic church at Millerville for John Abel and Marcine Cichy, his niece, who were drowned Friday about noon in Lake Moses. Solemn requiem mass was celebrated by Rev. Fr. Wilkes, assisted by Father Lorsung as deacon and Father Julig as subdeacon. The funeral was attended by hundred of sorrowing relatives and friends of the uncle and niece who met such a tragic end.
John Abel was born at Shaffshausen, Alsace-Lorraine, Germany, on October 29, 1879. At the age of three years he came to America with his parents, the late Mr. and Mrs. Mike Abel, and settled on the farm now owned by his brother, Nick Abel. He grew to manhood there and learned the carpenter trade, becoming the leading building contractor of the Millerville community for many years past. John Abel was a good citizen and a kind and friendly neighbor, and his tragic end was a shock to the whole community.
He never married but leaves five brothers and two sisters to mourn his loss: Frederick, Peter, Nicholas, Conrad, Lizzie (Mrs. C. Arken) and Mary (Mrs. Joseph Cichy) all of Millerville, and Michael Abel, who lives at Lake Lenora, Saskatchewan, Canada.
The cross bearer at the funeral service was Ferdinand Shirber and the pallbearers were: Joe Pischke, Joe Hagedorn, Martin Hagedorn, Andrew wilm, Aug. Roers and Henry Brooks.
Marcine Cichy
Marcine Cichy, the only child of Mr. and Mrs. Jos. Cichy, was born at Millerville on September 11th, 1923. She attended the parochial schools at Millerville and was confirmed just a short time ago. She was a lovable child, and the bereaved parents have the sympathy of the whole community.
Her cross bearer at the funeral was Ann Pischke and the pallbearers were: Rita Prazak, Marcine Roers, Loraine Korkowski, Violet Kuhn, Luella Thoennes and Lorraine Thoennes.
