Son of Lobie and Iva Deckard Kent. He graduated from Nashville High School with the class of 1942. For a time, he was employed by the Harry Stephens company. He entered the Air Corps in April 1943 and received his training at Seymour, IN and Johnson Field, NC. Later he was selected for A.S.T.P. training and went to Brooklyn, NY. After his class was dissolved, he was transferred to the infantry. He left the States in October 1944 and was stationed in England, France, and Belgium. He was killed in action January 15, 1945 in Belgium during the Battle of the Bulge. He was married to Ruth Stephens Kent and just three days before his death, a son, Gary Richard, was born. He did not live to hear of his son's birth.
