US Congressman. He attended Gilmanton Academy, graduated from Dartmouth College, in 1851, studied law, was admitted to the bar in 1855 and practiced law in Dover, New Hampshire. He was Strafford County solicitor, Mayor of Dover, and a member of the New Hampshire State Senate. He also served in the New Hampshire State House of Representatives, in 1874 and was United States Attorney for the district of Hampshire. In 1879, he was elected as a Republican to the Forty-sixth and Forty-seventh Congresses, serving until 1883. After leaving Congress, he resumed the practice of law until his death at age 69.
