Paul S. Jones, Nationally known last figure, dies- founded City firm with partner in 1931 was 79.
Paul S. Jones 34 Morse Ave. a nationally known figure in the field of last manufacturing, and a civic leader, died today in his home after a lingering illness. Had he lived until Sunday he would have noted is 80th birthday anniversary.
Mr. Jones was born in Holbrook, Feb. 11 1882, the son of the late Alvin L. Jones and Emmeline (Leonard) Jones. He was educated in the Holbrook schools and after graduation, served his apprenticeship in the D.A. Miller Co. factory in Brockton. Later he was a designer for the Belcher Last Co. of Stoughton for 10 years.
Mr. Jones started in business for himself in 1913 as a partner for the Sturgis-Jones Last Co. and in 1919 bought the Mawhinney Last Co. which he sold in 1929. In 1931, he founded the Jones and Vining Inc. with the late Howard C. Vining as partner, also manufacturing show lasts. He served his company as president for 26 years before resigning in 1957, but continued as treasurer of the corporation until his death. He found much time to devote to civic causes in addition to his business activities, serving as president of the Brockton Hospital for several years. He was named a director of the Massachusetts War Fund in 1943 by Charles C. Cabot, State Council President, in recognition of his outstanding work with the Brockton Community Fund, the predecessor of the United Fund.
He also served as president of the Brockton Family Welfare Association, was the oldest active past president of the Rotary Club, which he joined in 1920, and active in the affairs of the Commercial Club, where he was a member for 40 years. He was active in Masonic Orders and the oldest living past master of Stoughton Grange.
In his field he was a past president of the National Last Manufacturing Association and in 1958 was awarded a citation by the United States Government for his contribution to the manufacture of lasts for military shoes. He served as advisor to the U.S. Quartermaster Corp. from 1949 to 1956 and developed a basic last for oxfords for the Army, Navy, and Air Force, each of which previously used a different last. He was treasurer of the Jay-Vee Shoe Tree Co.
He served as president of the Montello Federal Saving and Loan Assn. with which he had be affiliated for more than 30 years and was also vice-president and a director.
He was a member of Waldo Congregational Church and served in many of its offices.
He and Mrs. Jones observed their 58th wedding anniversary January 7, 1962.
He is survived by his wife Mabel (Watson) Jones, whom he married at her former home in South Boston in 1904; three sons Laurence W. , Leslie F, and Paul S. Jr. two daughters; Gertrude A. Schell and Mrs. Louis (Carolyn) Woodland of W. Barnstable; 13 grandchildren and six great grandchildren, a sister, Mrs. Franklin H. Merriam of Cambridge. The funeral services will be held Saturday, at 11 AM at the Samson Funeral Home.
