Anchorage Daily News October 15, 2008

Pioneer Alaskan Alice S. Snodgrass, 94, died Oct. 12, 2008, at the Palmer Pioneers' Home. A celebration of her life was at the United Protestant Church, 713 S. Denali St., in Palmer.

Alice was born Nov. 19, 1913, in Seattle and moved with her family first to Seward in 1915, and then to Anchorage by 1917. She graduated from Anchorage High School in 1931, and from the University of Alaska Fairbanks in 1935 with a bachelor's degree in business. After college, she married Roland Snodgrass and moved to Palmer. In Palmer, Alice started her career working for the Alaska Rural Rehabilitation Corp. in support of the Matanuska Colony. She also worked for the USDA Experiment Station, the Territorial Department of Agriculture and for many years at Matanuska Electric Association. She was active in the Palmer community. Alice served on the board of directors of Matanuska Telephone Association, and also on committees for the Matanuska Valley Federal Credit Union, Mat-Su Community College and Palmer Senior Citizens. She enjoyed playing cards, including pan, pinochle and bridge. Alice enjoyed spending time with family and friends, and especially looked forward to visits with her young great-grandchildren in her later years and getting together with her long-time bridge group.

She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Jack and Jeannie Snodgrass of Palmer; grandson, Matt Snodgrass and his wife, Staci; granddaughter, Hillary Jacques and her husband, Jason; granddaughter, Shelley Tubbs and her husband, Taft; grandson, Nick Snodgrass; great-grandchildren, Karissa, Eli, Shane and Connor; many nieces and nepews and their families; and her close friend, Diane Johnson. Alice was preceded in death by Roland, her husband of nearly 50 years. Donations may be sent to Friends of the Palmer Public Library, 655 S. Valley Way, Palmer 99645. Visit the online memorial at
