WALNUT — Oscar W. Kroenke, 89, of rural Walnut, died at 5:25 p.m., Saturday, August 20, 2011 at the Prairie Mission Retirement Village in St. Paul.
He was born on December 22, 1921 at rural Hepler to Arthur C. and Lydia Dorthea (Weber) Kroenke.
He grew up near Hepler and attended the Lutheran Grade School and Hepler High School.
He served in the United States Army during World War II. Following his honorable discharge, Oscar returned to the area where he farmed for many years near Walnut. He and Ida Mae Howell were married on August 29, 1943 in the Immanuel Lutheran Church at rural Hepler. She preceded him in death on May 12, 2011.
He was a member of the Immanuel Lutheran Church at rural Hepler, the Walther League, and the National Farmers Organization.
Oscar is survived by four sons, Keith Eldon Kroenke of Bowlen Green, MO, Orville Wayne Kroenke of Iola, Robert Dean Kroenke of St. Paul, Edward Eugene Kroenke of Overton, TX; four daughters, Joy Sue Holloway of Girard, Freda Fay Kos of Nevada, MO, Reta Kay Baker of Fort Scott, and Janice Irene Baker of Hepler; 22 grandchildren; 34 great-grandchildren; 5 great great-grandchildren; one brother, Melvin Kroenke of Topeka, three sisters, Florene Herlocker of Girard, Viola Beckman of Brazilton, and Gladys Hay of Girard. In addition to his wife he was preceded in death by a brother, Wilbert Kroenke, a sister, Elsie Stoll, and two great-grandchildren, Colton David Cornelius and Ashton Thomas Cornelius.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m., Thursday, August 25, 2011 at the Immanuel Lutheran Church at rural Hepler. Burial will follow in the Immanuel Lutheran Cemetery at rural Hepler.
The family will receive friends at the Smith-Carson-Wall Funeral Home in Girard from 6 to 7 Wednesday evening.
