Howard R. Carl
Howard R. Carl, 86, of St. Lawrence, died Wednesday, July 21, 1999, at the Hand County Memorial Hospital in Miller.
Funeral services were held Saturday, July 24, at the First United Methodist Chruch, Miller, with the Rev. Richard Gould officiating. Burial was in the G.A.R., Cemetery.
Howard Robert Carl was born May 1, 1913, to Robert E. and Emma Jane (Snyder) Carl in Aiken, Minn. As a small child, he moved with his family to Carlton Township nort of St. Lawrence, S.D. He attended school at Hand City County School. His father died when Howard was 11 years old, and he then ehlped his mother with the farm and with raising his brothers and sisters.
He married Rachel Marie Benz on August 20, 1934, in St. Lawrence. They lived, farmed and ranched in the St. Lawrence, Wessington, and Miller areas until 1948, when they moved to their present farm i Holden Township north of Miller.
He loved country life, and visiting with family and friends. Rlatives and their friends came fromother states to stay with the Carls to hunt pheasants. Howard enjoyed hunting and playing cards, especially pinochle.
He was a member of the First United Methodist church in Miller.
He is survived by his wife, Rachel, St. Lawrence; a son, Robert (Bob) Carl, St. Lawrence; one brother, Percy Carl of Hillsdale, Illinois; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters, Mildred Reinhardt and Muriel in infancy; and two brothers, Bernard Vens and Pete Vens.
