Heart Attack Proves Fatal To C. R. Kent – Acting Chief of Police Succumbs Saturday Night

Cap. Charles Richardson Kent, 65, acting chief of police for the city of Shreveport, died unexpectedly last night of a heart attack at his home, 1516 Maple Street.

A veteran of almost 24 years on the local police force, Captain Kent was appointed acting chief of police by Commissioner of Public Safety L. K. Barney on May 6, when Chief of Police Claude C. Russell resigned.

Commissioner Barney said shortly after advised of Kent's death, that affairs of the office of the chief of police would be directed by him until "such time as a capable man could be found for the office."

According to Captain Kent's physician, the acting chief of police suffered a sudden heart attack sometime between 9:30 and 9:40 p.m. last night and died a few minutes later. He said that Captain Kent's death was unexpected as he had not been ill recently.

Captain Kent, a native of Springfield, Mo., was born on July 17, 1881, and came to Shreveport in 1912. He was employed as a boiler inspector for the Kansas City Southern lines, and joined the local police force on Oct. 20, 1922, as a patrolman.

He was appointed lieutenant of police on Aug. 1, 1926, and received his appointment to captain in 1930.

Commissioner Barney said he "deeply regretted Captain Kent's death" and said that he was all the citizens of Shreveport could expect in a chief of police.

"Captain Kent was experienced, and a fully capable officer. He enforced the law to the fullest extent of his knowledge and power."

In announcing the appointment of Captain Kent as acting chief of police, May 6, Commissioner Barney said: "It is fortunate that we have a man like Captain Kent to assume such responsibility.

He has given many years of faithful service and his abilities are well known."

Captain Kent is survived by his widow, one daughter, Anetha, and one brother, J. W. Kent, of Springfield, Mo., who is expected to arrive in Shreveport today.

Funeral arrangements will be announced on the arrival of his brother from Springfield. The body is being held at the Wellman funeral home.

Services For C. R. Kent At 10 A.M. Today – Veteran Police Officer Was Recently Made Acting Chief

Funeral services for Acting Chief of Police C. R. Kent, 65, will be held at 10 a.m. today from St. John's Catholic Church with Father J. J. Druhan officiating. Burial will be in Greenwood Cemetery under the direction of Wellman funeral home.

Active pallbearers will be Commissioner L. K. Barney, Capt. E. G. Huckabay, Assistant Chief Grady Williamson, Luther Miller, Pat Malloy, W. A. Jones, Dr. R. R. Wilson, and R. C. Williams.

Honorary pallbearers will be David Roos, Dr. W. T. Butler, W. H. Davis, L. H. Williams, John McW. Ford, Mayor Sam S. Caldwell, Fire Chief S. J. Flores, L. F. Clawson, Bob Murth, Gov. J. H. Davis, all members of the police and fire departments, members of the Caddo sheriff's department, Knights of Columbus, auxiliary police members, and members of the chamber of commerce.

Captain Kent, a veteran of 24 years on the city police force, died shortly before 10 p.m. Saturday of a heart attack at his home, 1516 Maple Street.

He was appointed acting chief of police on May 6 by Commissioner Barney when Chief of Ploce Claude C. Russell resigned. Captain Kent was a native of Springfield, Mo. He came to Shreveport in 1912.

He is survived by his widow; one daughter, Miss Anetha Kent, and one brother, J. W. Kent, of Springfield, Missouri.
