JOHN O. STETSON IS CALLED TO HIS REWARD.
John O. Stetson, a resident of this vicinity since 1855, passed away about 4 o'clock Tuesday morning after a long illness terminating in Bright's disease, which caused his death. The funeral services were very brief and were held from his late residence three miles northeast of Neponset yesterday noon, Rev. H.L. Hartwell, pastor of the Congregational church being in charge. The Neponset lodge with which the deceased was afiliated attended the services in a body and conducted the ceremonies at the grave in Floral Hill cemetery where the interment occurred in the family burial lot. Andy T. Boyle, of Kewanee, conducted the Masonic ceremonies.
The deceased was sixty years of age and came to this vicinity with his parents, Dr. and Mrs. Ezra Stetson, when he was but eight years of age and he has resided here continuously since that time. He was born in Galesburg, Mich., on June 21, 1847, and was the youngest in the family of six children.
Besides his wife, who is left to mourn, he leaves one son, Ezra, who reached his majority yesterday, and one daughter, Ella, both of whom reside at home. He also leaves three brothers and one sister, who are as follows: E.S. Stetson, of Neponset; J.M. Stetson, of Neponset and Dr. I.B. Stetson, of Sheffield, and Mrs. Emma Chandler, of Richmond, Michigan, who is at present in Neponset. His parents and a brother, Jesse M. Stetson, preceeded him several years ago.
Mr. Stetson was a member of Neponset lodge No. 435 A.F. & A.M. and in 1879 he served the lodge as its Master. He afterwards joined Neponset lodge No. 803, A.F. & A.M., and also was a member of Kewanee Chapter R.A.M.
For many years he was a member of the firm of Ezra Stetson & Sons, which dealt very extensively in Percheron horses and by his association with this firm he became well known throughout the entire surrounding country, and the funeral yesterday was one of the largest attended here for several years.
