Ensign Nathaniel Bates was a Revolutionary War Hero who initially served as a minuteman in the army, participating in the 1775 siege of Boston. He later was promoted to the rank of sergeant before retiring permanently. He lived a long life, marrying four time, before he died at the age of 92 in 1840.
He is buried at Bettes Cemetery, an abandoned, relatively-unknown cemetery located on Tallmadge Ave, atop a hill behind some industrial buildings.
