Loma Farmer Found Dead in Cistern
James E. (Ed) Kirk, well known Loma rancher, apparently suffered a heart attack while bailing water out of his cistern about 10 miles northwest of Loma, and fell into the cistern. The accident was supposed to have happened about 11:30 a.m. last Wednesday morning. The body was not discovered until 12:20 p.m. Friday.
Mr. Kirk's absence was discovered by his brother-in-law, William LaFurgey, who went to the Kirk ranch to visit and not finding him around and discovering mail still in the box he notified the sheriff's office here. Deputy Royal Archer went to the ranch accompanied by LaFurgey and his brother, Howard LaFurgey, and they started a search of the place. Their attention was called to the well by an empty bucket nearby. In examining the cistern the body was discovered there. It was reported that Mr. Kirk had been suffering from dizzy spells for some time.
Mr. Kirk was held in high esteem by all who knew him.
He was born in Missouri on Oct. 19, 1886, and resided there as a young man. He was united in marriage at Perry, Okla., to Lorena LeFurgey, on Nov. 13, 1909. The family came to Montana in 1913 and resided for a short time in Great Falls. He took up land in the Loma section in 1916, and except for a short period had continuously resided there. His wife preceded him in death.
Mr. Kirk is survived by two sons, Eugene and Walter Kirk, both of Loma; two granddaughters; and three sisters, Mrs. Ina Stewart and Lucy Bowles, of Ponca City, Okla., and Irene Speakman, of Burbank, Okla.
Funeral services were held from the Benton Funeral Home chapel on Tuesday afternoon at 2 o'clock, conducted by the Rev. Hugh S. Herbert, pastor of the First Methodist church. Burial was made in Riverside Cemetery.
The relatives have the sympathy of all in their bereavement.
