U.S. Congressman. Successful in the brokerage and insurance business, he was a member of the Maryland State House of Delegates, (1926-33), general deputy collector of internal revenue, (1933-34) and a member of the Baltimore City Council, (1935-38). In 1939, he was elected as a Democrat to the Seventy-sixth Congress and to the next four succeeding Congresses, serving until his resignation in 1947. He then served as Mayor of Baltimore, (1947-59). In 1961, he was appointed by President Kennedy to the Federal Renegotiation Board, serving until 1969. Retiring from politics, he was an insurance and real estate broker until his death at age 84. His son Thomas D'Alesandro III, also served as Mayor of Baltimore, (1967-71).
