Kathleen A. "Kathy" Rossman Gill was born in Yankton, S.D., on November 26, 1937, the daughter of Eugene and Marian (Smith) Rossman. She lived in Sioux City, Iowa, until the summer before her junior year in high school. The King family moved to the Ledyard, Iowa, area and she graduated from Leyard Consolidated High School in 1955. She then graduated from a three-year degree nursing program in 1958 in Yankton, S.D. She worked in many areas, some of which were Albert Lea, Blue Earth, Seattle, Wash., and Minneapolis. After her marriage, she worked in Dell Rapids, S.D.

She was married to Raymond "Ray" Gill in January 30, 1965, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Ledyard, Iowa. They resided on a farm near Eagan, S.D., where Ray farmed and she helped him. In October of 1969, they moved to Elmore and purchased the dry cleaners from her parents, "Kings Kleaners." They operated this until August of 1983, when it closed due to Ray's ill health. Ray died in 1997.

She served on the executive board of the Democratic/Labor Party of Faribault County from 1992-2007. She was a charter member of the Elmore Historical Society, formed in 1993.
