A great man died in Sigourney quietly at home on Friday August 19, 2011 surrounded by love and family. Harry Richard Baumert, 85, was born in Keota on June 29, 1926, to Floyd and Pearl(Brock)Baumert. He attended Keota High School and joined the United States Army, serving in the Philippine Island of Palawan and other Pacific theaters during WWII. In 1947 he met and married Frances Jean Schauf in Wellman. They celebrated their 64th anniversary this year. Harry became a certified auto mechanic working at Bandy's Garage and Gretter Motors in Keota several years before he moved and opened Baumert's Garage in Sigourney in 1966, where he continued to work until earlier this year. He retired in 1987 after a fulfilling career with Natural Gas Pipeline. Baumert's Garage continues, operated by his sons and grandson. His life, and the way he lived it, is his legacy to his proud family.

Harry is survived by his wife Frances, sons Ronald and Richard(Christine)Baumert, Bob(Deb)Schauf, daughters Cheryl Steffen, Colleen(Darrell)Goldman, Joanne Baumertomalka, Patricia(Peter)Hammes, and Sandra Killin, his grandchildren Jennifer(Dean)Palmer, Krista, Spencer, Jeremy(Maggie)Goldman, Jake, Joseph, Christopher, Alexander, Benjamin(Brandi)Hammes, Dillon, Ethan, Pearl, Lily, Travis, and Ashley, and five great-grandchildren.

Gone before were his parents and siblings Paul, Howard, Duane, Norma, Glen, Donald, and Dorothy, and son-in-law Nick Tomalka, and Karl Steffen.

Surviving siblings are Margaret Burke, Marilyn Van Fleet, Darlene Streets, Loretta Streigle, Dennis, Larry and Gene Baumert.

Visitation will be held from 4-7 pm Tuesday, August 23rd at Powell Funeral Home in Keota where the family will be present from 5-7 pm. Memorial service is Wednesday, August 24th at 10:30 am at the Christian Church in Sigourney. Per Harry's wishes, his body has been cremated and will be placed in the family plot at the Keota Cemetery. Memorials may be given to the family or Keokuk County Hospice. He was loving and loved. He was forgiving and forgiven. He will be missed.
