Army Spc. Nathaniel A. Caldwell was assigned to the 404th Air Support Battalion, 4th Infantry Division, Fort Hood, Texas where he was a tank mechanic. Caldwell died in Baghdad when the Humvee he was in rolled over him and he was thrown out. He was still alive when they got to him but it took an hour to get Caldwell to a hospital where he was pronounced dead shortly after arriving. Nate wanted to become a pastor and looked forward to starting a counseling center when he got out of the Army. Caldwell grew up in Arizona and studied sports management at Peru State College in Peru, Nebr. He was 6-foot-4, 225 pounds and was named Peru State's most inspirational player during the 1997-98 season.

Nathaniel Alexander Caldwell, Jr., age 27, of Phoenix, AZ, passed away May 21, 2003 in Baghdad, Iraq. He was born November 18, 1975. He grew up in Phoenix, AZ and grad-uated from Maryvale in 1994. He went on to get a bachelors degree in sports management at Peru State in 1999. Nathaniel was a loving father, devoted husband, and cherished son. He joined the Army in January of 2001. He was a Specialist who worked on the M1 Abrams tanks at Fort Hood, TX. He loved basket-ball and spending time at home with his wife. His favorite times were spent on holidays with his family and children. Nathaniel had a trademark smile, that will never be forgotten. Nathaniel's dream was to be a chaplain and open a youth counseling center. He had a lot of life left on earth to finish, but was ready for heaven. He will always be remembered as a "polished angel." He is survived by his wife Amanda; children Donovan M. Caldwell (6) and Endira J. Caldwell (4), and Dallas R. Linder (9) of Council Bluff, Iowa. Brothers Darryl Caldwell of Phoenix, AZ, Robert Caldwell of Junction City, KS; sister Sabrina Caldwell of Norfolk, VA. He is also survived by mother and stepfather Marion and Eugene Brooks of Winslow, AZ, father and stepmother Nathaniel A. Caldwell Sr. and Bealinda Caldwell. He is survived by grandparents Nellie M. White of Texas and Carol A. Hauser of Winslow, AZ. Also lots of cousins, nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by Johnny and Willie Mae Caldwell Sr. and Lemuel Collier Sr. and sister Corrina Caldwell and cousin James H. Smith. Visitation will be 1:00 PM, Monday, June 2, 2003 at Greenwood Memory Lawn Serenity Chapel, 719 N. 27th Ave., Phx., AZ. With services to follow at 2:00 PM.
