Was called to his heavenly home on Thursday, August 18, 2011 at his home in Frankenmuth. Age 89 years; Pastor Deterding was born February 8, 1922 in Bluffs, IL to the late Rev. John H. and Salome Deterding. He was married to Marion Voigt on June 25, 1947; she survives him. Pastor Deterding received his Masters of Divinity from Concordia Seminary in St. Louis, Missouri and was called to South Shore Trinity Lutheran Church in White Bear Lake, MN. In 1953, he was called to Calvary Lutheran Church in Sioux City, IA. In 1962, he was called to St. Lorenz Lutheran Church in Frankenmuth, serving for 25 years until his retirement in 1987. Pastor Deterding received his Honorary Doctor of Divinity Degree from Concordia Theological Seminary in Fort Wayne, IN.

Surviving are four daughters and one son; Katy (Bruce) Anderson, Jane (Chuck) Boerger, Dorcas Cook, John P. (Dru) Deterding and Chris (Jerry) Maurer, 15 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren, four brothers and two sisters; George Deterding, Jim (Marty) Deterding, Emily Winkleman, Betty (Duane) Beringer, Walter Deterding and Roland (Pat) Deterding and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by a grandson Aaron, a son-in-law David Cook, two sisters and one brother.

Funeral service will take place on Monday, August 22, 2011 at 11:00 a.m. at St. Lorenz Lutheran Church. Rev. Mark D. Brandt will officiate with burial in St. Lorenz Lutheran Cemetery. Pastor Deterding's family will receive visitors at St. Lorenz Lutheran Church on Sunday from 2:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. and on Monday from 10:00 a.m. until the time of service. In lieu of flowers those planning an expression of sympathy may wish to consider memorials to St. Lorenz Media Ministry or St. Lorenz Student Aid Fund. Arrangements entrusted to Cederberg Funeral Home of Frankenmuth.
