In the spring of 1944, S/Sgt Henry Baldauf served as a radioman on a B-24 with the 461st Bomb Group, 764th Bomb Squadron, 49th Bomb Wing, 15th AAF, in Italy. After returning to the States for a 30-day furlough, Baldauf was traveling to Miami, FL, from Chicago when his train was in a head-on collision at Terre Haute, IN. He was killed with 26 other airmen and 3 train crew members.
