Eva Marie was the daughter of John and Marie Haman Havlik who had immigrated to America in 1876, about two years before she was born. John had four children from his first marriage and Eva migrated with her parents and half-siblings to Nebraska in the early 1880s. They settled first in Saline County and by 1888, had migrated further west to Rushville, Nebraska.

She married William Augustus Pelham, a widower with two living children, on May 25, 1896 in Deadwood, South Dakota. She and William had two sons:

Charles Russel (1901-1902)
John James (1908-1984)

Eva cared for her parents who moved near her in their final years.
