He was the s/o Bailey C. and Sarah "Sallie" Scanlan Butler. He married first Mary "Polly" Gore on 2 July 1844. Their children were Mary, William, and Mounce Gore. After her death he married Sarah Ann Holford on 14 Apr 1853. Their children were Liza, John, Bowen, George, Mattie, Dixie, Rosie Lee, Thomas, James, and Samuel.
When the War came he joined the Confederacy, Gov. Isham Harris appointed him to the Commissary Office as Capt. of the 25th Tennessee Volunteers under Stanton on the 27 Sept 1861. Due to painful rheumatism he asked for discharge, this request was granted by Gen. Geo. G. Dibrell on 7 Mar 1862.
